Ortho-Bionomy® Common Questions

Ortho-Bionomy® is a body modality that reinforces the body’s ability to access healing from within. The goal is the restoration of health and to eliminate pain.

What is Ortho-Bionomy®?

Ortho-Bionomy® is a gentle, non-invasive approach to alternative healing. It’s extremely adaptable and  based on one’s individual needs. Though the techniques originated decades ago, the work is progressive and has an innovative quality to it. The techniques can be used on both humans and animals. Ortho-Bionomy® can induce relief from aches, pain, or discomfort caused by a variety of injuries or diseases. Ortho-Bionomy® is a much calmer, and less intense method of bodywork than most are used to. The work may seem subtle at times, yet while working directly with the nervous system the results can be quite profound and long lasting.

Ortho-Bionomy® addresses both the structural and neurological aspects of the body. That is why the sky is the limit as far as what can be effected. This work can impact your body, mind, and spirit. Because it originated through osteopathy, the initial technique was based on the thesis “structure governs function.”

Ortho-Bionomy® utilizes natural reflexes and responses to movement and change. It is a practitioners responsibility to carefully listen to the signals that naturally occur in the body. Self-correction is key, once the body understands what we are asking of it, it will automatically change and adapt. In doing so our hope is that the body will adopt a healthier, more comfortable sense of normal.

How is Ortho-Bionomy® different from massage?

While massage therapy primarily focuses on soft tissue manipulation i.e. your muscles, Ortho-Bionomy® is a scientific and technical approach that addresses the whole body. We work with releasing the muscles from the inside out, where their insertion and origins are attached to bone. We work across the joints, manipulating the connective tissue, and repositioning structure.

How does Ortho-Bionomy® differ from Chiropractic adjusting?

Chiropractic adjustments are typically done with more force. Most Chiropractic adjustments are relatively quick and focused primarily on structure, nerve conduction, and alignment of your bones. We work with your structure in a different way, we use compression and traction, as well as reflexes and different degrees of pressure and we take our time, allowing the body to correct when it feels safe and ready. Again, our focus is broad, bones, to connective tissue i.e. ligaments, and tendons, to soft tissue, to fascia.

Is Ortho-Bionomy® similar to Reiki?

Reiki is a healing art where the practitioner primarily uses nontangible energy to access the body, and the Reiki Master uses their own energy to “heal” you. With Ortho-Bionomy® though there can be an energetic component and sometimes it is useful to lighten our touch, most OB practitioners will be using tangible techniques which include movement and firm but gentle compression and/or traction. The other distinct difference is that Ortho-Bionomists do not refer to themselves as “healers” or “energy workers”. If we do find it necessary to address an issue energetically, we still use the principles of OB and will not be “channeling” energy. The mantra for Ortho-Bionomy® is for the body to access its own innate ability to heal itself, and your OB practitioner helps your body in that reeducation, in order to restore what has been forgotten.

How often Should I receive a treatment?

The answer to this is purely individual. Under extreme circumstances frequent work is highly
beneficial to speed up healing. For example, if someone has sprained their ankle it would suffice to work with it every day, but generally speaking it is recommended that one would allow at least 72 hours of integration between sessions. For practical purposes most clients who are working towards a certain goal schedule their sessions about a week apart. In most cases the condition resolves and your sessions become less frequent. Once you get better and your body is able to maintain self correction and a balance on its own it is nice to receive a session here and there for relaxation and general upkeep, about once a month or so.

What things does Ortho-Bionomy® help with?

Ortho-Bionomy® can help with acute or chonic pain resulting from illness or injury. Some of the most common issues that we address are:

  • Back Pain, including Sciatica and bulging discs
  • Neck Issues, Whiplash

Can I piggyback an Ortho-Bionomy® session on top of a different therapy or modality on the same day?

It is preferable that you allow some time between your OB session and other body work simply to give your nervous system ample time to respond, and to in order to monitor the effectiveness of your session.

Will I be sore after my session?

While I can’t make a concrete prediction as it is completely individual, I can say that the majority of client’s experience relief from discomfort after their session(s) and a small percent feel a little sore the next day but it typically subsides fairly quickly. Also let me just mention that the soreness is usually described as feeling like something has shifted and now is settling into a new position.

Is Ortho-Bionomy® safe for pregnant women?

Yes OB is completely safe for pregnant women, prenatal issues such as back pain, swelling in the legs, hands and feet are some of the symptoms which may be addressed. OB can be effective in more complicated maternity issues as well, such as turning a breech. Of course as with anything else if you are expecting you should always check with your Doctor if you have concerns about trying something new.

Would Ortho-Bionomy® be good for my pet?

Absolutely! There are many Ortho-Bionomists who focus A large percentage of their practice on helping animals. Though I do not see animals in my office for health reasons, I am happy to do home visits or otherwise refer you to a practitioner who can more efficiently provide sessions for your pet.

Some final thoughts:

I would like to disclose that the comparisons I have made in regards to other modalities in no way are meant to discount their value. As a bodyworker and scholar of the human body and its miraculous ability to heal, I am always interested in the effects and benefits of alternative care, and I personally have received many varieties of holistic therapy. Each seem to have their own purpose and function on the spectrum. – Charity

Are there directions to the office?

Our location can be found on google maps if you type in “O.B.Body”; however I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the directions before you start driving as it can be a bit confusing.

15110 Boones Ferry Rd is accessible only by turning onto Spring Lane, and then immediately taking right into the “Spring Creek Campus” parking lot.

The first building you will see is a two story brown building, that is NOT us, keep following the drive around the corner and you will see a blue building with white trim that looks like a row of townhomes. Our suite (350) is all the way at the far end of the parking lot.

Our office is on the second floor from the ground and there are stairs if you go through the door next to our sign, if you prefer the elevator it is through the double French doors.

Please proceed into our waiting room. Help yourself to water or tea and Charity will happily greet you at your approximate scheduled time.

What to I need to do to prepare for my visit?

Once you have booked your appointment keep your eye out for reminder emails or text messages, (depending on the option you have selected)

If you have time it is preferable that you fill out the intake form in advance, if you book online you will have the option to do so then, otherwise Charity can forward it to your email.

On the day of your appointment wear something lose or comfortable, un-like other therapies such as massage or Qi, there is no need to divest your clothes during an Ortho-Bionomy session.
